A Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Veg Garden

There has never been a more interesting time for edible gardening. It is right on so many levels. It saves money, saves the planet and satisfies our epicurean appetites. Edible gardening is an opportunity to grow interesting flavours fresher than money can buy. It is the key to children being more adventurous with food. If they grow it, they will eat it – and that’s exciting.

Unlike crazes of the past, such as decking and blue fences, a cohort of trowel-carrying cooks has created the current enthusiasm for home-grown. I think it’s a trend that’s here to stay. Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall have not only raised sales of vegetable seeds above those of flowers; they have brought many beginners into gardening.

Latin names are not required and the archaic notion that veg growing is a “blue job” and cooking “pink” has been booted well and truly into the long grass. In its place is an ever-expanding range of edibles bred for our plots and our pots. If you’re just starting out, here’s what you need to know.

Sewing Tips for Beginners

I don’t consider myself the best in the world at sewing, however, I have been doing it for quite a few years now and have learned a few things over the years that I feel are worth sharing (Side note: I started sewing at around age 8 when my Grandma gave me an old sewing box of hers. Back then my sewing projects mainly consisted of cutting the legs off my jeans and then sewing up the bottom to make a ridiculously ugly denim purse. I thought I was awesome and those denim bags would be my claim to fame one day).

Interval Training For Beginners

Research from the Mayo Clinic and several universities has proven that interval training is more effective than your average cardio workout. Oh and it’s do-able in less than half the time. But, before you get started on your HIIT routine, know your fitness level. This isn’t easy work and you really have to push yourself or you won’t be getting the full advantage. In fact, if you are prone to taking lots of breaks, prep yourself. The key to interval training is the rapid increase in heart rate between SHORT periods of rest. Your exertion should be much more than your break. But, it’s super important to actively rest. Keep moving between the high intensity intervals.
